Hi guys! I had mentioned that I was doing this 12 day detox with my sister (@zimbalicious) a few weeks ago on my Instagram account and I received so many DMs for more info.. so here it is. I’ll try to keep it brief and unfortunately, I cannot give out any of the smoothie recipes because the ebook is for sale and I would like to support it. I was not paid or asked to promote this detox I am simply doing so because I genuinely enjoyed it.
My sister has polycystic ovarian syndrome which caused her to put on a large amount of weight in a short period of time. She had been following a well balanced diet with regular exercise for a long time and not seeing any results. I noticed that she was feeling demotivated to carry on with this lifestyle so I suggested that she try a detox and that we could do together to keep her motivated.
As you can see in the title the detox last 12 days, during these 12 days you replace main meals, i.e. breakfast, lunch and dinner, with smoothies. You are allowed to snack in between meals if you really need to. Some days I needed all 3 smoothies plus snacks, other days I only needed the smoothies.
The smoothies are filling and delicious. Honestly, I was skeptical about it initially because I am not of a fan of green in my drinks but I promise, you won’t even taste it! The best part is that there is a different smoothie for each of the 12 days so there’s no chance of getting bored. The only downside for me was that it cost about $100 worth of groceries, mainly because some of the fruit was out of season and berries are incredibly expensive here. Now, that may not be a lot for you, but I am an unemployed 25 year old still living off my mom, so it is for me.
I washed, chopped and froze most of the fruits for easier smoothie making
The first and last two days were the hardest for me. Other than that it was very easy to stick to. On a typical day, I had all 3 smoothies, stir fried veggies with chicken breast or beef in the afternoon and a chicken salad in the evening. At the end of the detox my skin was looking and feeling great (Although I can’t give all credit to the detox, Saadiya from Saadiya’s Spa did give me a wonderful facial during that time which left my face glowing but I’d like to think the detox enhanced the results) I lost 3 kgs overall but I felt like I had lost a lot more because my tummy felt and looked very flat. My sister a total of 4kg. This is a big deal for her and I can see the difference it’s made on her. She has been feeling refreshed and motivated to get back to a healthy weight. I usually drink 2 cups of tea a day in Summer and 4 cups a day in Winter. During the detox I only drank herbal tea once. Since I’ve completed the detox I haven’t had any tea cravings and I now only drink it socially 🙂
The detox is rich in nutrients but very low calorie, which is why I had large ”snacks” in between. The smoothies range from 500-700 calories per day. So if you’re looking at it from a caloric point of view you can safely add another 500-700 calories and still lose weight. That being said, I don’t recommend you to do this with the intention of losing weight. It is a detox, treat it as a detox and the weight-loss as a welcomed side effect. Detoxes are usually done before a diet or lifestyle change so that it is more effective as well as easier. You want to clear your digestive system and reset your mind and body to enjoy eating healthy, fresh and wholesome foods without craving junk. It’s like a fresh start for your body. If you aren’t planning to go on a diet or change your lifestyle a detox is still good for you to refresh your body every few months.
Overall, this was a lovely experience. I will definitely do the detox again in a few weeks, probably in the New Year after all the Christmas cookies and puddings are sitting happily in my belly.
